Am running 5385 with minimum blue screens, hitches or bugs... so far. The only real issue I had was with Trend Antivirus coming to a screeching halt mid installation and then refusing to be uninstalled. In the end I went with the latest version of Avast.
That said, I was going to reformat & reinstall 5385 to get rid of the Trend leftovers that have been mocking me. But if 5486 may soon be available to the rest of the 5385 masses, I can live with some short term mockery.
Does anyone have any idea when this might be available?
I read Paul Thurott's review and things look promising.

5486 - When will it be released to the masses with 5385?
Build 5456 is not available to the Customer Preview Program and will not be. It was released this weekend to the TechBeta testers. If you feel you need to reinstall Vista then proceed with the 5384 you have been using.

Thanks Guv'nor! Not really what I wanted to hear - but such is life. I'll just have to wait for the next build to roll out before I take the time reformat, reinstall & reboot.

Unfortunately, the next build for the public beta is scheduled to be the Release Candidate and that is months away. Sorry.

I thought it was two months away. BTW HOW can anyone become a Tecnical beta tester? OK The concept of seeing the latest and greatrest before anyone esle is pretty cool along with a complimentary license of the finished product. :)

TechBeta testers are not being told that they will be given a complimentary license to the final release.
The TechBeta folks are computer industry people. long time beta testers of a variety of products, as well as MVP's (only about 10%). The individuals are folks who got into various beta programs over the years and are known and sought by MS for their adeptness at ferreting out bugs and writing excellent bug reports as well as being dependable for followup testing. These folks do not commonly spend a lot of energy on "sentiments." The network savvy folks are especially sought after. One way to get nominated into some of the programs that feed into beta testing is to become known for helping users with their Windows experience in some of the public applications and OS newsgroups. Becoming known for helpful responses rather than caustic comments is crucial in the ng's.
More recently bloggers who demonstrate technical prowess attract Microsoft's attention. Some social networking can lead to contacts within MS which can bring you to the attention of a program manager.
Largely it is a process of getting nominated to participate in one thing and being remembered for future ones. Self-nomination is welcomed.
The starting point is Microsoft Connect, which is now the clearing house. Opportunities for participation in beta programs are posted there. If a program isn't posted, then it is likely not open yet or has all the testers needed.
I hope this helps.

The info you posted sort of helps.
I had assumed this was the case in many programs.
It would be a nice gift to all of us tech beta testers but I do not believe it will happen-I got a couple user packs (user gif, background, and wink) for testing Windows Live Messenger and I did not expect anything.

I got a free copy of Office 2003 Pro for just being a guinea pig for XP SP2. I didn't have to do anything but install the SP2 beta and a program that monitored my system for MS. I did have to uninstall it at the end and then apply the release, but it sure seemed good value for little work and no attention on my part.
